Africa is our home!

Our team members are either currently living in Africa or were born in Africa and have lived there for most of our lives. As such, we know Southern and East Africa from a local perspective. Yet with our African-born safari consultants being US-based, we understand the expectations of our discerning North American and international clientele and are able to effectively intertwine these expectations with our destination knowledge and itinerary-design expertise.

We are passionate about what we do and can’t wait to introduce you to the Africa we call home.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the places and moments that take our breath away” —Mark Twain

An incredible guide is the cornerstone to an incredible safari.

Our SHS guides are among the most highly educated and experienced in Tanzania and will offer you an incomparable wildlife-viewing experience. They know the reserves and their wildlife intimately, are expert spotters and will take you to areas that most other operators are simply not familiar with.

With unlimited game drives, no mileage restrictions and our special access permits, we can take you to explore remote and game-rich areas not accessed by most other operators, greatly enhancing the quality of your wildlife-viewing experience.

With subtle enhancements like double permits, your group is not subject to time limitations in certain areas, and with special access permits we can take you to the far reaches of the parks to places not on the itineraries of other operators.

Our guides are passionate about their job and Southern Hemisphere Safaris. This translates into enthusiasm, energy and dedication to ensuring you truly have the trip of a lifetime.

  • Throughout the process, the Southern Hemisphere Safaris team listened to our requests and helped shape a wonderful vacation.

SHS was in communication with us throughout the entire process which was a great help as this was our first safari. They anticipated our needs, and set us up with a fantastic vacation.  The lodges booked by SHS was amazing, both in Zambia and in Kruger. We also enjoyed working with the SHS team. They were incredibly knowledgeable, and responsive to all of our questions.

  • Southern Hemisphere Safaris (SHS) provided my husband and I a trip of a lifetime.

SHS planned everything from the minute we stepped off the plane. I did not have to worry about any details, flight information, confirmations, everything was handled. Lynn and Lisa were so helpful, answered all of our questions, made sure we had all of our travel documents squared away. I never worked with individual that are so professional, courteous and extremely knowledgeable of the area. SHS took great care of us, and made sure our interests were involved during the planning of our trip. I highly recommend SHS for your safari needs. You will find working with Lynn and Lisa to be absolutely seamless. Our trip was everything they had promised and more. I can’t imagine it to be any different. The properties were fantastic, the food was exceptional and the guides were amazing. It was the best trip ever.

    Sunita B. and Ray H. (September 2015)
  • Every detail of our trip was well thought out and executed.

Lynn at Southern Hemisphere Safaris planned a month long trip for our family (kids ages 11 and 13).  We started in Zimbabwe on safari and ended up going down the Garden Route from Cape Town.  We had the right number of nights for each location that ensured that our children would not get bored (without electronics).  She picked locations that had varied activities and game viewing.  She picked lodges that supported the local communities and environment while being luxurious.

She sent us documents to make sure we were prepared: pack lists, tipping recommendations, driving directions, a guide to road signs, recommended attractions, phrases in different languages, baggage allowances, etc.

    Elisa K. (August 2015)
  • This was the best vacation I’ve had so far in my lifetime (I’m 30).

The overall package was expensive relative to what I’m used to spending on vacations, but it was worth it. Everything was very well organized, and if we were ever unclear on something from our trip itinerary, our questions were either answered right away or expediently followed up on. The travel company, Southern Hemisphere Safaris, would always get back to us via email as requested, and even took our phone calls when necessary. In the weeks leading up to the trip, they kept in touch with updates, to-do lists, FAQs, etc.

The most enjoyable part of the trip were the multiple game rides we were able to go on at each location.   The fact that traveling to and from different locations was a game ride itself was also awesome.  The most memorable part for me will be getting into that first safari Jeep to be taken to the lodge on the Zambezi river.   We got picked up on the side of the road and started driving into the “bush.”   We had maybe gone about 10 km when a Sable jumped out across our jeep just 30 yards up.  I knew then that it would be a great trip.

    Jason P. and Christine A. (July 2015)
  • Our bucket list, dream trip come true.

We were taken care of every step of the way on our trip from our arrival at JRO and being personally met and escorted promptly through the visa process (greatly appreciated after over 33 hours of travel!), escorted arrival at our destination in Arusha to be oriented to all that awaited us on our trip, every step of the way – we were in great hands.

This trip was my dream come true and my husband was willing to come along. After all our experiences with the people and animals, it became his dream trip come true also.  We’re even talking about a second trip!  When it is time for hearts to visit Africa again, we will definitely go with Lynn and SHS and hope that once again we will be guided by our good friend, Msami.  I highly recommend this experience of a lifetime and to book with Lynn and SHS.  She made our dream come true.

    Belinda C. (May 2015)
  • We live in Australia and you would think that the time difference would concern us when working together at such a distance.

However, there was not one email that wasn’t answered in a thorough and timely manner, with clear information, details that surpassed our expectations. This never wavered throughout the long planning stages of our special surprise to our sons and their girlfriends. It has to be said that working with Lynn Newby-Fraser made the planning of this amazing trip very easy. I believe she was as passionate about making our trip the ultimate surprise for our adult children and their girlfriends at Christmas 2011 as we were. If we had any concerns or difficulties, even if the problem didn’t relate to our safari in any way Lynn would nonetheless make every effort to find a solution. Nothing was ever too much effort. Lynn never failed us on any detail, solution or on-going support throughout.

    Barb & Gerard S., Australia
  • Our planning guide, Lynn, was fantastic.

She was extremely responsive to our questions (which were endless), diligent in planning an itinerary and accommodations that matched our visions (which among the four of us were diverse), and invaluable with the additional ideas and suggestions she offered. We needed and wanted some guidance and direction on setting up our trip.

    Ed T. and Family, USA

“From our home office to the folks picking you up at the airport, SHS is your friend in town! We let you simply relax and enjoy the breathtaking sights of Africa.”

Why SHS for Families

We are specialists with family safaris. A standard component of our family-friendly safari itineraries includes incorporating two or more lodges with swimming pools, lodges that accommodate triples where there is just one child, or lodges that offer interleading rooms / family suites where there are two or more children.

Cultural activities such as visiting a local village are interesting to adults and children alike. However, a particularly enlightening and unforgettable experience for the younger members of the family is to visit a local Tanzanian school where they are also able, should they choose, to interact with children their own age.

For children between the ages of 6 and 11, an extremely popular and highly successful tool is our Southern Hemisphere Safaris Junior Ranger program. Created by an individual who spent 16 years teaching martial arts in an academy that was renowned for its exceptional retention rates of children, the custom program is designed to capture and maintain the interest of our young safari goers. Modules cover a diverse array of topics and include several interactive modules such as building a small section of a Maasai hut wall, learning how to throw a Maasai spear (a wooden replica, of course), milking a goat, grinding corn and more. To share a little secret, we find these activities great fun too!

To maintain enthusiasm, rewards are earned on a daily basis, and your child ultimately graduates as a Southern Hemisphere Safaris Junior Ranger with a certificate of accomplishment and a recognition patch.

Looking beyond Tanzania, “exclusive use” cottages and villas are available in many of the private concessions/conservancies and are ideal for families and groups of friends.

Why SHS for Photographers

We are photographers ourselves and understand the dynamics of lighting and vehicle positioning as they pertain to wildlife photography. Our special access permits allow us to take you off the beaten track and far from other tourists while our safari vehicles are designed to withstand the rigors of off-road driving in authorized “low impact” areas.

Our guides have an innate knowledge and understanding of animals, allowing them to often accurately predict behavior and position our vehicles accordingly. Their driving skills and exceptional knowledge of the national parks and game loops allow our guides to take our clients to remote areas often devoid of landmarks and without a GPS or compass. They strive to be the first vehicle on the roads in the morning and encourage our photography clients to take a picnic breakfast and lunch to enjoy adventure game drives that take them to the more pristine and remote areas of the parks. Further, our guides have infinite patience while our photographic client’s wait “for just the right” moment.

Combine the above with our signature private safaris, unlimited game drives with unlimited mileage, and vehicles that come equipped with canvas roll-back tops for unrestricted 360 degree game-viewing, a battery charging station and beanbags, and you have the key ingredients needed for an incredibly successful photo safari.

Unless you see copyright information, all of the wildlife, landscape, portrait and other photographs on this website were taken by Southern Hemisphere Safaris. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Lynn Newby-Fraser, Safari Specialist

I was born to a family whose European roots were planted in Africa over 400 years ago, and I have spent most of my life in South Africa. I have always been captivated by the wildlife and staggering scenic beauty of Africa, and in 2010 I achieved a lifelong goal when I graduated at the top of my class as a certified wildlife guide with the prestigious Field Guides Association of Southern Africa ( License #N14211/10/1). Other certifications include Africa Nature Training (License #CCO4/2011) and CATHSSETA Nature Site Guide L2  (License #206398763). I also passed the Advanced Course in Behavior of African Mammals taught in Namibia by the world-renowned wildlife specialist Dr. Richard D. Estes.

In addition to my passion about wildlife, I bring Southern Hemisphere Safaris to you from an African perspective. I studied at the University of Cape Town, South Africa before embarking on a five year adventure aboard a 46′ yacht, reaching such ports as St. Helena Island, Ascension Island, the Amazon Basin, Venezuela, Spain, Monaco, Italy, Greece, Israel and Turkey among many others.  My personal achievements include earning a 5th degree black belt in martial arts and being inaugurated into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2004 as “Female Instructor of the Year” as well receiving the “Female Filipino Martial Arts Instructor of the Year” in 2006. I have traveled extensively, from crossing the Atlantic in the aforementioned yacht, to hiking in the rainforests of Borneo and Brazil and on the glaciers of South Island, New Zealand, swimming with sharks in Polynesia, and white-water rafting in Nepal, as well as studying the wildlife of the Galapagos Islands.

I have traveled as a client on countless wildlife-focused and photographic safaris in many African countries, including South Africa, Botswana, Kenya Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

I first traveled to Tanzania on safari in 2004 and was immediately enthralled by the spectacular Serengeti. Unable to resist the lure, I started working full time as a Tanzanian safari specialist and ultimately held the position of Director of Field Operations for a major Tanzanian tour operator. I have been to Tanzania on countless research safaris and continue to regularly travel to the alluring quartet of northern parks. By understanding the impact of weather conditions on wildlife movements such as the Great Migration, remaining fully updated with lodging options and other important “safari ingredients,” I am able to design a custom itinerary that optimally matches the interests of my clients. Further, being that I spend a considerable amount of time in the safari destinations each year, I know many of the seldom visited places where you will be able to experience the raw African wilderness.

My greatest pleasure lies in using my knowledge, experience and expertise to help my clients plan a safari and enjoy the extraordinary beauty and magnificent wildlife of my beautiful home…Africa.

Lisa Newby-Fraser, Destination Specialist

I left South Africa, my country of birth, at the age of eight to sail around the world with my parents and spent the next 6 years exploring every inch of the globe. I was extremely fortunate to have a tutor on board, so when we were in the Seychelles, as an example, I studied French history and French geography. As the currents carried us further north along the African coast, my knowledge of the various African and European countries broadened correspondingly. We spent some years living in Majorca, Spain, where I learned both French and Spanish while attending school at College Francais. This experience created a desire to travel further, and I continue to be amazed at the enchantment and vibrancy of the African continent.

After completing my tertiary education in business & tourism in South Africa, I relocated to London and later the United States. In 2010, unable to resist, I returned to Cape Town where I have been living ever since.

Like my sister, I have studied martial arts and was proud to have achieved the rank of 1st Dan black belt in 2003. I am passionate about the environment and preserving our natural resources such as the extraordinary fynbos vegetation found only in the Cape Province. Its medicinal uses are incredible and have been used by the San Bushmen for hundreds of years. Ensuring that our clients have an exceptional and unforgettable experience in South Africa helps maintain the flow of tourism to our country and ensures the ultimate sustainability of this beautiful part of the world.

Mathilde Mugica, Destination Specialist / Especialista En Africa

I am Mathilde, a Biologist from Mexico City where I was born and where I presently live with my family. I have been working in education for over 20 years and, for as far back as I can remember, I have loved animals. My first trip to Africa was in 2011 and I have come back as many times as possible to enjoy the animals, the sunsets and the people. Most recently, I was in Botswana where I participated in a Bush Skills Course which included studying elements of African flora, fauna, geology and tracking.

Like the rest of the SHS team, I have a passion for photography and find it is a way I can bring back a small piece of what I see and have learned about the Bush. I have traveled extensively from China to Australia, from Canada to the Amazon but, to me, Africa is the place I cherish the most.

I am passionate about wildlife and about conservation and spreading the word about it. We protect what we know and understand. I believe it is a privilege to be able to experience Africa first hand and it would be a privilege for me to help you in making your dream trip a reality.

And for our Spanish speaking clients…..

Little compares to the great feeling of “giving” back, and we are proud to be part of an industry—the safari industry as a whole—which gives back to the areas and communities in which we operate.

While the list of needy causes is almost endless and can vary according to the country concerned, at SHS our approach to giving back to the country of Tanzania is in helping to combat deforestation. This might initially seem an unusual choice, but if you read further you’ll see that deforestation is a very serious problem, with destructive tentacles that creep into and cripple many different facets of life.

Every day at least 80,000 acres of forest
vanish from the Earth

A critical and insidious problem facing third-world countries is “deforestation” and the devastating consequences such as severe flooding, landslides and watershed degradation. Using the latter as just one example, deforestation of the Mau Forest in Kenya has resulted in the Mara River, the life-line of the Great Migration during the dry season months, to fall to its lowest level ever. Lake Nakuru, a birdwatcher’s paradise, is disappearing as the rivers that feed it have run dry. Narok county, the breadbasket of Kenya, was a barren dust bowl in April, traditionally the wettest month of the year. The rivers were able to sustain cattle through past years of drought, but that is no longer the case, and in western Kenya the tea plantations, which feed on the rivers of western Mau, have seen their yields cut by 20%.

Across the border the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro has suffered from global warming effects, forest fires and illegal logging of the mountain’s forest cover. This has resulted in receding ice and consequently less water in the streams that originate on the mountain. This has caused untold hardships on the local people, who have traditionally utilized the streams to irrigate farms on the slopes of the mountain. The Arusha and Manyara regions of northern Tanzania have not escaped either. With this in mind, for every client who travels on safari with SHS, we make a donation to Green Living Planet (GLP).

This non-profit organization is headed by Ben Mariki, a remarkable and selfless Tanzanian who is dedicated to conservation and local community development and welfare. SHS supports Ben’s approach of “teaching a man to fish.”

While GLP is active with several different types of projects, our donation enables GLP to plant trees in schools, villages and other areas, thus beginning to combat the crippling socio-economic effects of deforestation. Children and villagers help till and prepare the soil, plant seedlings and trees, and are then taught how to nurture the trees. â€‹The seedlings and small trees are already binding and enriching the soil and the vision of them providing shade and fruit is indeed heart-warming. If you are interested in visiting one of the project sites, please let us know. If there is a nearby project, we will be pleased to take you there, and you can even plant seedlings and trees donated by SHS on your behalf. This is a particularly rewarding experience for families with children and a wonderful way to start your East African adventure.
